Liberia suspends tariffs on rice imports

31/01/2023,

On 4 January 2023, the Government of Liberia issued Executive Order No. 113,suspending, with immediate effect, import tariffs on semi/wholly milled and broken rice.  The new order effectively continues zero tariff conditions that were already in place under a previous Executive Order No. 105 of May 2021, which expired.

The measure is one of several taken by the government to keep the prices of selected basic commodities in check, and this particular measure aims to curb rice prices, the country’s main staple food. Suspensions of tariffs on rice imports have been recurrent in the past years with the first one approved in March 2008 (Executive Order No. 11).
