Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM)

Tools in the GLEAM ecosystem

GLEAM-X interactive web application

GLEAM-X interactive web application is a user-friendly tool that provides access to the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM), developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It applies the IPCC Tier 2 methodology to estimate the environmental impacts of livestock agrifood systems and applies a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, accounting for both direct on-farm emissions and indirect emissions along the production chain.

GLEAM-X interactive web application is designed for farmers, producers, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders. It enables the comparison of different livestock production scenarios and supports the assessment of projects and interventions at different stages, including ex-ante evaluations, monitoring during implementation, and ex-post impact assessments. The web application evaluates impacts related to animal husbandry, herd management, feed systems, manure management, energy use, and post-farm emissions, and quantifies changes in soil carbon sequestration resulting from improved grazing management practices.

The web application enables rapid, user-friendly calculations, scenario comparisons, and visualizations. For more detailed analyses, customized modelling, or the preparation of national greenhouse gas inventories, the full-featured GLEAM-X R package is recommended.

The development of GLEAM-X interactive web application was supported by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Regional Identity of the Government of Germany.

GLEAM-X R package

The GLEAM-X R package is an open-source modelling tool that leverages FAO’s GLEAM datasets and methodologies into the R programming environment, making livestock emissions analysis more accessible, transparent, and adaptable. By integrating official GLEAM data and methods, the package enables reproducible, flexible, and customizable modelling workflows.

The GLEAM-X R package broadens access to livestock emissions modelling, enabling users worldwide to apply standardized FAO methodologies while tailoring analyses to their specific contexts and needs.

Freely available on CRAN and GitHub, the GLEAM-X R package is accompanied by guidance materials and learning resources to facilitate its adoption by governments, researchers, and development partners.

GLEAM dashboards

Results from the latest version of GLEAM (using 2015 as a reference year) are accessible through our GLEAM dashboards, highly interactive web applications for visualization, analysis, and dissemination of data.

GLEAM v3 Emissions dashboard

This application allows aggregation and visualization of data related to livestock numbers, animal production, greenhouse gas emissions, and emission intensities by region, production systems, and source of emissions.

GLEAM v3 Water Use dashboard

This application allows aggregation and visualization of data related to water use and water footprints in livestock agrifood systems, and considers water used for feed production, as well as direct water use for drinking water and service water.

The GLEAM Data Explorer is an interactive web application that provides access to key parameters and datasets used in GLEAM workflows for environmental assessments of livestock systems. Key data sets include emission factors for manure management systems from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change guidelines, feed nutritional parameters, and water footprints for feed.  By enabling users to filter parameters by livestock species, climate conditions, production systems and other criteria, the application simplifies the process of compiling consistent inputs for environmental impact assessments from livestock systems.
