The Committee on Fisheries

The Committee on Fisheries (COFI) was established by the Conference at its 13th Session in 1965. COFI reviews the programmes of work of the Organization in the field of fisheries and reviews fishery problems of an international nature, evaluating possible solutions with a view to concerted action by nations, FAO and other intergovernmental bodies.

The comprehensive terms of reference of the Committee are prescribed in Rule XXX of the General Rules of the Organization.

COFI reports to the Council on programme and budgetary matters and to the Conference on policy and regulatory matters.

The Committee meets in regular session once a biennium in non-Conference years, and may hold additional sessions when necessary.

Membership

The Committee on Fisheries is open to all Members who notify the Director-General in writing of their desire to become Members and of their intention to participate in its work. The notification may be made at any time but not later than 10 days before the opening date of a session. Membership acquired on this basis shall be considered valid unless the Member has not been represented at two consecutive sessions of the Committee, or has notified its withdrawal from it.
