Action Against Desertification supports african countries in the sustainable management and restoration of their dryland forests and rangelands. These efforts build on a harmonized regional strategy for the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and the Sahel Initiative, developed by FAO and partners and on action plans for each individual country

This publication supports processes related to rural communities’ resilience in implementing land restoration of the Great Green Wall Programme on the ground. It serves a dual purpose of consolidating biophysical operations and socio-economic assessments, and is mainly built on five-year interventions and practical experiences gathered through Action Against Desertification.

The Africa Open DEAL and Africa’s Great Green Wall initiative is a first-of-its-kind collection of accurate, comprehensive, and harmonized African land use and land use change data. It provides a detailed panorama of land use and change across the entire continent and countries, captured through more than 300 000 sampling points taken from very high-resolution satellite imagery.

This annual report updates stakeholders on the results achieved by FAO and CIFOR-ICRAF in the implementation of the Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) programme. The report gives a brief introduction to K4GGWA, then a summary of the key achievements and deliverables, and challenges faced and lessons learnt during the first year of the programme (September 2023 to September 2024), as well as perspectives for the next year of implementation.
