As part of its ongoing support to the implementation of the Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative, FAO’s Action Against Desertification (AAD) programme has completed a socio-economic baseline in Djibouti to serve as the foundation for restoration action and monitoring impacts of interventions in the country. Through a robust household survey, the programme gathered essential insights into the livelihoods of rural communities living in four of the five regions in the country: Ali Sabieh, Arta, Dikhil, and Tadjourah.

A four-day hands-on training was held in Kano and Jigawa States of Nigeria, bringing together 38 experts from 10 northern states. The training combined a half-day classroom session with three and a half days of fieldwork in two different sites and States.

Through its Action Against Desertification (AAD) program, FAO has invested in the restoration of degraded land for agricultural and pastoral purposes, in support of the implementation of the Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative. This support focuses on land restoration, including land preparation, seeding and planting activities, creating and managing community management committees, management and marketing of products, the equitable distribution of profits from site exploitation, and networking.

This report provides a summary of key learning gaps hindering the effective the implementation of the Great Green Wall initiative. It is based on a review of GGW related capacity assessments, evaluations and project reports, as well as FAO’s 15 years of experience in supporting countries in implementing the GGW. A total of 30 learning needs have been identified as priorities for implementing the GGW.
