The Food and Agriculture Organization, in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the World Food Forum Ghana Chapter, has convened a training workshop under its AIM4Forests Young Forest Champions initiative to build the capacity of young leaders in forest monitoring, restoration, and climate action.

At COP30, Brazil presented its first consolidated national estimate of native vegetation under restoration — 3.4 million hectares of — marking a historic step toward achieving the country's goal of restoring 12 million hectares of native vegetation by 2030, under the National Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation (Planaveg, acronym in Portuguese).

As dawn breaks over the Ororubá Mountains in Pernambuco, Brazil, a group of Indigenous youth of the Xukuru do Ororubá people gather at the edge of a nursery. They tend to native plant and tree seedlings: especially species used for medicinal purposes which were once lost but are now being revived.

In October 2025, a regional exchange workshop was held in Lima, bringing together 40 representatives of Indigenous Peoples and forest community organizations from nine countries across Latin America and the Caribbean— including Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.

Kosovo strengthens Forest Monitoring with Open Foris Arena

Kosovo has taken an important step in advancing its forest monitoring by launching the third cycle (2024–2025) of the National Forest Inventory (NFI). Building on earlier inventories conducted in 2002 and 2012, this new cycle marks a major technological leap forward through the integration of Open Foris Arena and Arena Mobile – open-source digital platforms that streamline data collection, processing, and quality assurance.

From July 28 to 30, the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and with the support of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Brazilian Coalition on Climate, Forests and Agriculture, held a national technical-scientific workshop in Brasília to advance the design of Brazil’s geospatial monitoring system for native vegetation recovery.

Rome and Bandung, Indonesia – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations today unveiled the first major redesign of its open-source forest monitoring platform, Open Foris, since its launch over 15 years ago. Developed as FAO’s first open-source project, Open Foris has grown into a widely used suite of digital solutions for forest and land monitoring, with more than 250,000 users in 196 countries.
