Boosting transparency of forest data

Pathways to Forest Data Transparency: How Robust Monitoring Drives Climate Action and Sustainable Solutions

21/11/2024

Forests are central to the achievement of global climate and sustainability goals. From their critical role in carbon sequestration to providing sustainable materials for a forest-based bioeconomy, they hold great potential to mitigate climate change. But to unlock this potential, one foundational element is essential: transparent and reliable forest monitoring data.

On 20 November, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, we have launched a new publication:

Pathways to Forest Data Transparency: Best Practices from National Forest Monitoring to Support Climate Action.

What’s Inside the New Publication?

This new publication sheds light on best practices from Africa, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean. By presenting case studies of robust national forest monitoring systems, it underscores the critical role of accurate, accessible, and open data in:

  • Strengthening sustainable forest management
  • Supporting emissions accountability
  • Accelerating progress toward the Paris Agreement and the Global Forest Goals

The document also explores methodologies and principles to empower stakeholders, from policymakers to local communities, to build high-quality forest data systems.

Zhimin Wu, CPF Chair, encapsulated the message perfectly during the event:  “Forests are key to achieving the Global Forest Goals, the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  And for achieving this objective, transparent and reliable data is the backbone of this progress."

Ongoing Efforts by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF)

The launch of this publication is part of the CPF’s broader efforts to promote sustainable forest-based bioeconomy practices. The CPF and its partners aim to foster collaboration, empower Indigenous Peoples, and mobilize financing to achieve forest-related climate targets while addressing the growing global demand for forest products sustainably.
