Awareness and engagement
Raising awareness
FAO works with its partners to raise awareness of the benefits of the Enhanced Transparency Framework and the importance of:
- Creating better institutional arrangements for collecting data and increasing data availability
- Investing in an institutional reporting framework
- Developing capacity in public and academic institutions related to climate change
- Data-driven policy decision-making
- Enacting policies to support the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems
These activities are carried out by actively participating in country, regional and international events such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COPs) and Climate Weeks.
Working with academia and young people for greater transparency
Universities and research institutions play a crucial role in climate transparency. They help build national capacity and address the shortage of qualified staff in public institutions. Additionally, universities provide the data, information, and technical expertise essential for preparing the Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
FAO supports academia in understanding their potential contributions to transparency, enhances their technical profile, and facilitates connections with governments.
FAO has also produced a wealth of knowledge, e-learning courses, case studies, tools and data to help
For young people, transparency can open up innovative career paths while providing them with a deep understanding of the relationship between human activities and climate change. They will also gain valuable insight into the importance of data in effective policy-making. As future leaders, they will be well-equipped to advocate for policies grounded in solid data, driving effective climate change solutions.
FAO has prepared some useful guides to help young people understand these issues and get involved:
- Transparency under the Paris Agreement: A pocket guide for young people and beginners
- Youth for climate transparency in the agriculture and land use sectors

Promoting gender equality
The FAO transparency team actively promotes gender inclusiveness and empowerment in all its activities. For example, it seeks to ensure gender equality in:
- High-level transparency related events and participation as panellists, experts and moderators
- Decision-making processes at all levels
- Capacity building events and discussions
