How to access funding

The Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) is the backbone of the Paris Agreement and significant funding is available to help countries meet their related commitments.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the major source of funding for transparency-related activities, in particular through the:

  • Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT); and
  • Support for Enabling activities to fulfil essential communication requirements under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), i.e., National Communications (NCs) and Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs).

FAO, as one of the implementing agencies of the GEF, assists countries in accessing transparency-related capacity building funding and provides streamlined technical support and quality assurance in designing national for the preparation of the Biennial Transparency Reports worldwide.

In addition, FAO, as one of the UN specialised agencies working in the most critical sectors affected by climate change, is also leading two global CBIT projects to ensure coordination with related initiatives and provide strong technical expertise.
