Meet the crew aboard the Nansen

A big welcome from your fellow crew members on this first leg of the Nansen’s Trans-Indian Ocean Survey trip departing from Jakarta 26 June 2015 and arriving in Mauritius 16 July 2015.

As you’ll see, we have a lot of expertise amongst this international crew (16 marine researchers from 12 countries) on this survey voyage, and we’re happy to answer your questions. Write to us and we’ll answer your queries on this site.

Indah Lutfiyati is an Indonesian working with Project Indonesia – Germany Science for the Protection of Indonesian Coastal Marine Ecosystem (SPICE) III. His background is in earth sciences.

Nasirin is an Indonesian working with the Department of Fishing Technology, Jakarta Fisheries. His background is in fisheries engineering, fisheries technologies, and marine control and system engineering.

Andria Asri Utama is an Indonesian student studying in Norway.

Patsy Theresine is from the Seychelles, and is a Senior Research Technician with the Seychelles National Park Authority. She has a background working with Smartfish on the identification of pelagic sharks and rays in the Western Indian Ocean.

Pazi Simili is from Tanzania and works as a Senior Laboratory Scientist (Biologist) at the University of Dar es Salaam, Department of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries. His areas of expertise are phytoplankton, water quality and food science.

Riaan Cedras is from South Africa and works at the University of Western Cape, with a  background in biodiversity and conservation biology.
Aina Le Don Nomenisoa is from Madagascar. She works in the Indian Ocean Commission and has a background in operational oceanography, remote sensing, GIS, and harmful algal bloom.

Bernerd Fulanda is from Kenya, working as a lecturer at Pwani University, in the Department of Biological Sciences, Kilifi. His expertise is in marine biology, abnd ecology and management of marine and freshwater fisheries.

Melody Puckridge is from Australia. She works at the University of Tasmania, Hobart Campus TAS and studied at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies.

Kristine Nilsen Torkildson is a Norwegian student studying meteorology and oceanography at the University of Bergen.

François Dufois is French. He lives in Australia where he is a postdoctoral research fellow at Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) specializing in physical oceanography.

Ainhoa Bernal Bajo is from Spain, working at BIOSFERA and the Generalitat of Catalunya. Her background is in marine science.

Michelle Fernandes is from India and works as a Project Associate at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa. She has a background in environmental science.

Alexander Christian Beck is a German national living in Norway and working for the Institute of Marine Research (IMR). He is a senior engineer/coastal geographer.

Toresen Reidar is Norwegian and works as a scientist and advisor at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR).

Espen Bagoien is Norwegian and works as a research scientist at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR).

Special thanks to IMR staff member Alex Beck, who has agreed to be our onboard blog coordinator. Alex will do his best to make sure we have a wide range of views from all the experts on board this research vessel. We’re looking forward to all the news from this survey trip.
