FAO and Türkiye’s cooperation is built on two Partnership Programmes dedicated to food security and sustainable management of natural resources – the FAO–Türkiye Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP) and the FAO–Türkiye Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP), both of which are supported by trust fund contributions from the Government of the Republic of Türkiye, totaling USD 30 million to date.
Established in 2007, the first phase of the FTPP received USD 10 million from Türkiye’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, funding 28 projects in 16 countries (2009–2015).
In 2014, Türkiye and FAO launched FTPP’s second phase (FTPP-II) and the FAO–Türkiye Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP) with an additional USD 20 million, raising Türkiye’s total contribution to USD 30 million. In the current phase, a range of projects are being implemented in the areas of:
- food security and nutrition
- agricultural and rural development
- protection and management of natural resources
- agricultural policies
- food safety
- sustainable forests, land and natural resource management, and land degradation neutrality
- institutional reform, training and national capacity enhancement.
The two programmes contribute significantly to strengthening the capacities of the countries of Central Asia and Caucasus in the agricultural and forestry sectors. The programmes also contribute to development in other countries, such as in Africa and the Balkans, not only through the provision of funding but also through shared experience and expertise.
