The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

IMPLEMENTATION OF RESTORATION

There is no universal recipe to implement FLR successfully in every context. The selection of the site, restoration method and species will depend on the needs and objectives of the interventions. Here different approaches and tools can be found to guide you through the implementation process. This module has been developed in the context of the GEF6 funded program “The Restoration Initiative”

As part of a UK–India collaboration on forestry, this summary report shows how Forest Landscape Restoration can safeguard biodiversity by taking a landscape approach using appropriate technologies and practical applications and produce real benefi ts for communities by working in partnership with them. The objective of this area of work is to provide an overview of forest restoration activities in India and the UK – small and large scale, public and private – that have the potential to deliver benefi ts for biodiversity and people. This is supported through case studies. This work can then provide the basis for a more co-ordinated approach to restoration initiatives and can help to 1) develop common concepts and guidance; 2) promote, document and monitor exemplar projects; 3) identify funding sources/build partnerships; 4) plan future projects strategically.

Restoring Tropical Forests is a hands-on guide to restoring tropical forest ecosystems to degraded areas. Based on concepts and innovative techniques developed at FORRU-CMU, this book provides advice and clearly illustrated instructions, covering every stage of forest restoration from site selection, engaging local communities, fund-raising, and formulating and implementing project plans to planting trees and monitoring progress. It also explains how to carry out research to refine restoration methods and adapt them to local ecological and socio-economic conditions. Restoring Tropical Forests is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in restoring tropical forests, including practitioners, researchers, students, and policy makers.

Local people are often left out of decision-making processes with regards to forest restoration and are only asked to 'participate' once implementation has began. This model has been used in most reforestation projects in Thailand. The results are low tree survival rates, lack of interest by local people to assist in protecting forest plantations and relatively low biodiversity. While many have often cited this as evidence that villagers are not interested in participating in forest protection, it actually reveals that local people were not involved in planning and decision-making. This paper describes two instances where villagers were involved in the full planning and implementation of forest restoration activities and explains why they were successful. Once local people are given a meaningful decisionmaking role the results can often be surprising.

This manual is intended to be a guide for individuals and groups who have seen the beauty and diversity of native plants and their habitats and who want to recreate a native habitat or to restore one to its natural condition. This manual includes guidelines for you to follow in planning and executing your habitat restoration project. In addition to guidelines, the appendices have most of the additional information you will need, such as an outline for doing a site assessment, protocols for eradicating pest plants, descriptions of the primary habitats found in Georgia with plant lists, reference materials, resource lists, contact information, etc.

This World Bank/TerrAfrica documentary showcases Ethiopia's success in sustainable land and water management. It highlights how a landscape approach was used to manage land, water and forest resources to meet the goals of food security and inclusive green growth. The lessons drawn are relevant for other countries in the region and other parts of the world fighting land degradation and climate change issues.
