Update on Ethiopia

He participated in a policy work session with the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) to identify policy constraints and recommendations on value chains price incentives and public expenditures analysed by MAFAP in Ethiopia. Researchers from EDRI presented the results of their analyses with interesting findings and recommendations which will lead to further research and discussion with the Government.

In a separate meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Planning and Programming Directorate expressed its interest in using MAFAP’s public expenditure analysis for policy planning. Discussions were initiated on the use of MAFAP results to inform the formulation of the Growth and Transformation Plan II for the period 2015-2020.

MAFAP’s work on public expenditure analysis also raised interest from different units of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, which reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on public expenditure data collection.

The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange Authority of the Ministry of Trade (ECEA) also requested training on the MAFAP methodology, to produce its own MAFAP-based analyses. Moreover, ECEA, EDRI and MAFAP will sign a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding.

In addition, the Agricultural Transformation Agency has expressed high interest in participating in the policy dialogue on MAFAP identified constraints. It will also contribute on the value chain analysis of ten commodities in common with MAFAP.
