Monitoring and Analysing Food and Agricultural Policies

Update on Mozambique

01/12/2014

The workshop explored how policies and public investments can best support food security and economic transformation in Mozambique. International and national researchers presented recent findings on a range of topics relating to agricultural production, agricultural markets, food security, nutrition, and economic growth in the country.

The MAFAP presentation focused on the competiveness of cash crops, in particular on the price incentives structure along the cashew nut value chain, one of the three main export commodities in Mozambique. The preliminary results emerging from this study are critical to the ongoing discussions with MINAG and the National Cashew Institute (Incaju) in view of identifying the main policy constrains in the sector and the possible solutions to be put forward.

The event also offered the chance to briefly introduce the scope of the food and agriculture public expenditure review that MAFAP is finalizing in close coordination with two partners in Mozambique, MINAG and CEPPAG, the national Research Center for Agricultural and Food Policies and Programmes.
