After intensive efforts over the last years, the Suriname National Fisherfolk Organization, SUNFO, is a fact. On the 14th of June Mr. Djoemadie Kasanmoesdiran, director of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries handed over the statutes to the board membres, establishing SUNFO as a legal organization.

SUNFO is the national umbrella organization for coastal fishers in Suriname and includes representatives from the five regional fisherfolk organizations in the communities of Galibi, Commewijne/Paramabo, Boskamp, Coronie and Nickerie. The establishment of SUNFO was made possible with support of Word Wildlife Fund Guianas and REBYC-II LAC, and frames within the Ministry’s policy as defined by the 2014-2018 Fisheries Management Plan.

As a national fisherfolk organization, SUNFO will contribute to strengthening the capacity of fishermen to participate in fisheries management at national and regional level. Further, as a member of the Caribbean Network of Fishersfolk Organization (CNFO), SUNFO will represent Suriname’s coastal fishers internationally. The organization will contribute to improve fishermen’s livelihoods, developping a sustainable and profitable industry through networking, representation and capacity building.
