Setting sustainable limits of water consumption: water accounting

As mentioned in the Water accounting and auditing system tab, a well-designed ‘water accounting system’ will support water resources management through analysis of water allocation scenarios to evaluate future trajectories of water use towards resources sustainability. At the same time, it provides information for evidence-based decision-making and policy development. When it is combined with water auditing, it also assesses the institutional effectiveness to govern water resources vis-à-vis the water related SDGs.

Under the project framework, this component is composed of the following activities:

1. crop mapping patterns to assess crop evapotranspiration and water productivity;

2. measuring and validating evapotranspiration (ET) and increasing certainties on crop evapotranspiration (crop ET);

3. learning by doing water accounting (WA) and auditing in order to understand the water scarcity situation.
