As part of the South-South Cooperation initiative, Indonesia and the Philippines have identified key areas for knowledge exchange. Indonesia, the world’s third-largest mango producer, has successfully implemented location-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for mango cultivation to promote IndoGAP adoption and improve productivity. The country has also gained experience in area-wide management of fruit flies, including cecid fly, through collaborations such as the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) project.
The field visit aims to assess and engage key stakeholders in Indonesia’s mango value chain to facilitate knowledge exchange between Indonesia and the Philippines. Specifically, the visit will:
- Assess and validate the suitability of the identified location and its associated farmers as a learning hub, ensuring it meets the necessary conditions for effective knowledge-sharing on location-specific SOPs for mango cultivation and cecid fly management.
- Exchange insights on mango production, pest outbreaks, and postharvest practices before formalizing the knowledge-sharing framework, allowing for adjustments based on on-the-ground realities.
- Gather insights from research institutions on data-driven pest management strategies and ongoing innovations in GAP adoption and fruit fly control to ensure that knowledge-sharing activities incorporate the most up-to-date and practical solutions.
- Engage farmers' cooperatives to assess the effectiveness of current interventions and identify any gaps before scaling up knowledge transfer to Philippine stakeholders.
This visit will strengthen institutional linkages and pave the way for a structured SSTC knowledge exchange, supporting the Philippines in addressing its mango industry challenges.
