Field visit to the IBES project sites

08/09/2026 - 12/09/2026

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has approved a USD 5 million allocation from the GEF Trust Fund for the Biodiversity focal area project under GEF-8, titled “Strengthening Governance and Community-Based Management of Inland Fisheries to Support Sustainable Use of Biodiversity and Building Resilience of Economic Systems (IBES).” The main goal of the IBES project is to develop a holistic and ecosystem-based inland fisheries management model in three WPPNRI inland water areas in Java, Kalimantan, and Sumatra—aiming to conserve biodiversity, improve governance, restore key habitats, and promote food security and livelihoods. GEF's approval of the Project Identification Form (PIF) has initiated the Project Preparation Grant (PPG) phase, during which a complete project document package must be prepared and submitted before February 10, 2027.

To officially commence the PPG phase, the project will organize visits to 3 Districts in North Sumatera Province (Simalungun, Dairi and Samosir) to meet with local fishers, associations, and authorities to develop familiarity with the sites and better understand specific local needs and the contexts in which the project interventions should be designed.
