SE.PLAN workshop to support community based forest restoration

Jakarta (Indonesia), 24/06/2026 - 26/06/2026

Forest and landscape restoration is a critical strategy for addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation while supporting sustainable development. Through its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (Enhanced NDC), Indonesia has committed to restoring 2 million hectares of degraded peatlands and rehabilitating 12 million hectares of degraded forest and critical land by 2030. These efforts contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing ecosystem resilience, and improving land productivity.

Indonesia’s social forestry program offers a significant opportunity to advance restoration objectives through community-based approaches. With approximately 8.3 million hectares of forest land managed by local and customary communities, social forestry can support restoration efforts while strengthening local livelihoods, food security, and sustainable natural resource management.

To support evidence-based restoration planning and monitoring, FAO developed SE.PLAN (Spatially Explicit Forest Restoration Planning), a decision-support tool within SEPAL paltform will helps identify, prioritize, and map cost-effective, high-impact restoration opportunities. By integrating ecological, social, and economic considerations, SE.PLAN enables stakeholders to design strategic restoration interventions that align with national targets and sustainable landscape management objectives.
