Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on 8 November, affecting nine Regions across central parts of the country and causing widespread devastation, massive loss of life and severe damage to the agriculture and fisheries sector. Official partial estimates indicate that some 153 495 hectares of rice paddy, maize and other high value crops such as coconut, banana, cassava, mango, vegetables have been adversely affected. As of 18 November, total crop losses are estimated at Philippines Peso (PHP) 4.72 billion (or USD 110 million at the current exchange rate) and overall damage to the agriculture sector close to PHP 10 billion (USD 225 million).
