Water is vital for economic and social progress and environmental integrity, yet it's just one of many critical natural resources. With 2.3 billion people living in water-stressed nations and floods causing significant agricultural losses, sustainable water management is essential. Agriculture, using 72 percent of global freshwater, must play a central role in addressing these challenges. Strong political will and enhanced financing are needed to manage water holistically and achieve all SDGs.

FAO recognizes that addressing water concerns requires an integrated approach to natural resource management. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) aligns with FAO's vision of "four betters" - better production, nutrition, environment, and life for all. In this context, a technical session will bring together expertise from various FAO divisions to promote cross-divisional collaboration, showcase global water-related SDG efforts, emphasize the water-food security nexus, and mobilize resources for SDG implementation.

The technical session on IWRM will harness expertise from different FAO divisions, including the Land and Water Division (NSL), the Forestry Division (NFO), the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI), the Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP), the Legal Office (LEGN) and the Investment Centre (CFI).

The session aims to:

  • promote cross-divisional collaboration within FAO for IWRM, emphasizing its role in fostering sustainable agricultural practices;
  • showcase FAO's global efforts in water-related SDG initiatives;
  • emphasize the critical nexus between water and food security, highlighting the importance of water for food production and ensuring global food security, and
  • enhance partnerships and mobilize resources to implement programmatic initiatives to the Sustainable Development Goals.
