Peaceful uses of nuclear technology to enhance sustainable agricultural development

(Italy), 12/10/2023

Informational Briefing + Reception

Speakers will highlight the contributions of nuclear science and applications to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, share information on the use of nuclear techniques in food and agriculture, highlight success stories, and offer perspectives on maximizing IAEA and FAO collaboration in these areas. This event will raise awareness of the development tools and resources of the FAO/IAEA Joint Center that are available to Member States and to facilitate dialogue. Nuclear science and technologies have proven safe and effective in improving crop and livestock breeds, controlling pest populations, managing soil and water resources, and enhancing food safety. Increased awareness of these tools, matched with additional resources, could facilitate the scaling up of these applications and their contributions to enhance sustainable agriculture and food security for all.

Following the informational briefing, attendees are invited to continue the conversation on the 8th Floor Terrace while enjoying an International Year of Millets-themed reception. Visiting award-winning U.S. Chef Matt Hill will present a special aperitivo menu highlighting this important ancient grain.
