"Rich in heritage, full of potential"

Thank you to all those who submitted photos for the International Year of Millets 2023 Photo Contest!

We received hundreds of great photos from over 50 countries around the world demonstrating the many benefits of millets, from their diversity to the variety of nutritious dishes they can produce, their ability to thrive on arid lands, and their market potential. Our jury had a tough time deciding on the first prize and the four runners up.

First prize

The first prize goes to Jonathon Rees from South Africa. Maria Nakumbwata harvests pearl millet after gathering Marula fruit in northern Namibia at the end of a good rainy season.

Second prize winner by public vote

Following a public vote from 11-15 December 2023, we are pleased to announce the second prize for the International Year of Millets 2023 Photo Contest! 

Role of women in millets conservation

The second prize is awarded to Raj Adhikari

Raj Adhikari's photo “Role of women in millets conservation” highlights the important role of women in millets in the cultivation and conservation of millets and how they hold great cultural and nutritional significance for Nepalese households, especially in small rural villages.



Dibakar Roy’s photo "In a line" depicts the stretching and pulling of little millets at a rice mill in West Bengal, India, where millets are a main source of income.

Guinea millet Farming production

Antricks Goodluck’s photo "Guinea millet farming production” pictures the cultivation of guinea millet in the Fouta Djallon plateau in north-western Guinea, a place where the crop is highly valued, and its soft seeds are ground into a flour used for various foods.



Satya Sainath’s photo "Millets for health" shows teachers in Telengana, India preparing the Raagi laddus millets dish as part of an early childhood care scheme that aims to enhance the dietary wellbeing of preschool kids, pregnant, and lactating mothers.

Jury and public vote

Photographs will be reviewed and selected by an international professional jury composed by Magnum Photos Editorial Director Giulietta Palumbo and FAO photographers, agronomists and communication specialists. After the professional jury has selected an overall winner, the four runners up will be posted on FAO social media accounts and a popular vote will select the second prize.
