Sandy, Matthew, Maria… The list of hurricanes and natural disasters which have struck Haïti over the last decade is long. Its location between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean make it highly vulnerable to extreme climatic events. These weather hazards are increasing in frequency and intensity with even more devastating impacts for the poorest country of the Western Hemisphere, warn experts. The agriculture including livestock sector – an efficient way to save money for Haïtian farmers - bear the major brunt of natural disasters. In June 2016, FAO launched the mobile vet clinics across the island. Their role is not only to treat livestock but also to protect farmers’ livelihoods by strengthening their resilience in the face of climate change. Greg Delaney has more.
