Oman

The Sultanate of Oman (Oman), located on the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, continues to advance its national development goals through strong economic performance, strategic climate change adaptation, improved food security, and the development of sustainable food systems. Oman’s key efforts aligns with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) priorities, highlighting the country’s transition towards a more resilient and inclusive economy.

Oman’s Economic Overview: Growth in Hydrocarbons and Diversified Sectors

Oman’s economy is classified as high-income and has shown robust performance in recent years. In 2024, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) amounted to 99.6 billion USD, largely fueled by the oil and gas sector. However, Oman is also investing in diversification, with non-oil sectors such as construction, tourism, manufacturing, and services showing upward momentum. Inflation was kept under control, averaging just 1%, contributing to overall economic stability.

Climate Change in Oman: Adaptation, Resilience, and National Strategy

As an arid country with limited freshwater resources, Oman faces unique climate risks, including droughts, sea level rise, and desertification. In response, Oman launched the National Strategy for Adaptation and Mitigation to Climate Change (2020–2040), a forward-looking plan targeting resilience in water security, coastal protection, agriculture, and marine biodiversity. With support from global partners like the FAO and the Green Climate Fund, Oman is building capacity for climate-smart agriculture and sustainable water management.

Sustainable Food Systems: Enhancing Oman’s Local Production and Value Chains

Oman is actively investing in sustainable food systems to enhance local agricultural production, reduce import dependency, and promote healthier diets. Ongoing programmes supported by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) are linking food production with market demand. These include awareness campaigns to shift consumer behavior, capacity building for smallholder farmers, and upgrading the national food value chain infrastructure.Areas of Focus
