The Partnerships with Non-State Actors at FAO – Progress Report 2023 provides a summary of FAO's partnership activities with non-state actors in 2023. The report offers an overview of FAO's level of engagement with various non-state actors, including civil society organizations, producer organizations, Indigenous Peoples, parliamentarians, and academic and research institutions, to contribute to the Four Betters and address the challenges of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The study assessed the sustainability of the Mediterranean diet in Lebanon through a water-energy-food system analysis. It aimed to: 1) identify interconnections between these systems; 2) create a nexus framework to assess intervention trade-offs; 3) gauge stakeholder perceptions and willingness to implement interventions.

This annual report presents the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)'s accomplishments in engaging with non-state actors (NSAs) during 2022, in alignment with the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031. The report highlights FAO's efforts to revitalize its approach to support the 2030 Agenda by fostering more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.

This report is the presentation of the methodology applied in Italy to spatially disaggregate the computation of the level of water stress from the national to the subnational scale (SDG indicator 6.4.2). Compared to the national assessment, which results in a low level of water stress in the country, the spatial disaggregation of the indicator by the hydrological unit highlighted the presence of basins affected by water stress exceeding 60 per cent (district of the Po river basin).

Illuminating Hidden Harvests: the contributions of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development (hereinafter IHH) is a study uncovering the contributions and impacts of small-scale fisheries through a multidisciplinary approach. The study provides information that quantifies and improves understanding of the crucial role of small-scale fisheries in the areas of food security and nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, poverty eradication and healthy ecosystems.

This study is a collaboration between FAO and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), lead centre of the CGIAR research programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA). Illustrated by eight country case-studies, the report reviews progress and outlines the technical and policy tools available for countries and stakeholders, as well as the steps needed, to effectively mainstream biodiversity in forestry.

This review, for the first time to date, analyses the potential of labelling and certification schemes for Indigenous Peoples to market their food products. Specifically, it looks at those schemes that are designed by, with and for Indigenous Peoples, and that can provide economic, social and environmental benefits while protecting and promoting their unique values centered around the respect of life and Mother Earth.

Sustainable Public Food Procurement (PFP) represents a key game changer for food systems transformation. It can influence both food consumption and food production patterns. It can deliver multiple social, economic, and environmental benefits towards sustainable food systems for healthy diets. This publication aims to contribute to the improved understanding, dissemination, and use of PFP as a development tool in particular in the case of school meals programmes.

The Manual of Food Portion Quantification: Saint Kitts and Nevis was developed to help individuals accurately report their food intake during the 2020 National Individual Food Consumption Survey. It complements the 24-hour Dietary Recall Method for adults aged 18-65 and supports nutrition education on portion sizes, obesity prevention, and food cost management. Featuring 121 food photos and household measurements, it provides essential guidance for nutrition planning in SKN and the Caribbean.

This publication provides an overview of the common and unique sustainability elements of Indigenous Peoples' food systems, in terms of natural resource management, access to the market, diet diversity, indigenous peoples’ governance systems, and links to traditional knowledge and indigenous languages. While enhancing the learning on Indigenous Peoples food systems, it will raise awareness on the need to enhance the protection of Indigenous Peoples' food systems as a source of livelihood.

This strategy specifically targets the different types of the private sector from large national and multinational corporations, to financial institutions, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), industry and trade organizations and consortia which represent private sector interests, farmers and farmers’ organizations, producers’ organizations and cooperatives and philanthropic foundations.

Through collaborative efforts, the study advocates for informed policies and partnerships to empower pastoralist communities in managing their own data and fostering sustainable development.

This report describes the water accounting study for the Nile River Basin carried out by IHE-Delft using the Water Productivity (WaPOR) data portal of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The Nile River Basin faces a huge challenge in terms of water security. In the next twenty-five years, water supply in the basin will be further depleted as demands continues to grow. Water availability in the basin will also be threatened by climate change and variability and pollution.

This report provides the water accounting study for Awash River basin in Ethiopia carried out by IHE-Delft using the Water Productivity (WaPOR) data portal of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The Awash River Basin is the most utilized river basin in Ethiopia hosting most of the industrial activities in the country, a number of small to large scale irrigation schemes and the main population centres of the country with more than 18.6 million people (2017 estimate).

This report provides the water accounting study for Litani River basin in Lebanon carried out by IHE Delft using the Water Productivity open data portal (WaPOR) of the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Increasing challenges such as growing population, climate change, groundwater over-exploitation and inter-basin transfers have put the available water resources in the basin under stress.

The evolving food systems pose significant risks, threatening their own sustainability. Despite global improvements, inequalities persist, exacerbating nutritional and social issues, especially in Low-Income and Lower Middle-Income countries. This report urges stakeholders to recognize the systemic nature of food systems and address their multiple risks for a more sustainable and equitable future.

This report describes the quality assessment of the FAO’s data portal to monitor Water Productivity through Open access of Remotely sensed derived data (WaPOR 1.0). The WaPOR 1.0 data portal has been prepared as a major output of the project: ´Using Remote Sensing in support of solutions to reduce agricultural water productivity gaps’, funded by the Government of The Netherlands.
