Established to…

answer the call of the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) by accelerating coordinated actions across food systems, for collective impact on healthy diets from sustainable food systems, to ensure healthy diets for all, in particular the most vulnerable. The measurable goal is to halve the number of people who cannot afford a healthy diet by 2030 and to ensure that food is produced from sustainable food systems.

The Coalition’s work includes…

1. Mobilising and coordinating existing expertise and stakeholders to align action across food systems for collective impact at the country-level.
2. Facilitating peer-to-peer learning between countries.
3. Managing special projects:
   • integrate considerations for sustainable food and diets into national commitments to the Paris Agreement on climate change;
   • develop and implement national sustainable Food-Based Dietary Guidelines;
   • enhance public engagement, including through awareness campaigns; and 
   • ensure diet-related interventions are leveraged to reduce malnutrition risks and vulnerability in fragile contexts.

FAO’s role is...

to utilize its unique expertise in food systems transformation for healthy diets and better nutrition in support of Members, by serving on the HDSFS Coalition Secretariat alongside WHO and the UN-Nutrition Secretariat and providing strategic and technical support to the coalition activities from its offices worldwide.
