Assessment of ecosystem services in livestock agroecosystems
Released in: June 2025 | Duration: 2 h
This e-learning course introduces the concept of ecosystem services provided by livestock agroecosystems and explores a range of assessment methods. Starting from foundational principles, it guides learners through biophysical, sociocultural, economic and modelling approaches, equipping them with the knowledge to effectively evaluate and promote ecosystem services in diverse agricultural contexts.
Languages: English, Russian
Thematic area: Carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions; Climate change and environment; Livestock, animal health and production; Soils and water management; Sustainable food systems
Assessing greenhouse emissions in livestock supply chains: Life cycle assessment approach
Duration: 5 h
This course aims to strengthen the analytical capacities of personnel involved in the national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory by enhancing their understanding of how life cycle assessment (LCA) can be applied to evaluate the environmental impacts of livestock activities.
Languages: English
Topics covered: Definitions, benefits and limitations of LCA; LCA phases; Life cycle inventory (LCI) and data collection; LCI assessment; Interpretation of LCA results.
Biodiversity and agrifood systems
Released in: February 2026 | Duration: 1.25 h
This course introduces the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem services and explores the crucial role of biodiversity in sustaining agrifood systems. It also analyses the global status of biodiversity, the drivers of its decline and the contribution of agrifood systems to biodiversity loss. Finally, the course explains why and how biodiversity should be mainstreamed across agrifood systems and outlines the key actions required to achieve this.
Languages: English
Thematic area: Climate change and environment
Climate change adaptation in the livestock sector
Duration: 3.5 h
This course provides an understanding of climate-related risks, key global climate trends, and their potential impacts on the land-based livestock supply chain. It presents strategies to facilitate livestock adaptation and showcases case studies illustrating successful mitigations efforts. Additionally, it introduces tools and models for monitoring and assessing adaptation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish
Topics covered: The impacts of climate change on the livestock sector; Strategies to facilitate livestock adaptation; Tools and approaches to support climate change adaptations in the livestock sector; Monitoring and evaluating climate change adaptations in the livestock sector.
Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action tool for climate-smart livestock farming
Duration: 30 h
This course focuses on the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA), a mechanism for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the livestock sector. NAMA promotes the sustainable use of resources and aligns with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) established under the Paris Agreement, aiming to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and limit the rise in global temperature.
Languages: Spanish
Topics covered: Integration of mitigation actions; Structuring the NAMA framework; MRV system.
