On the 8th of June 2016, after years of work, the Congress of the Dominican Republic approved a law that creates a National System for Food Sovereignty and Food Security and Nutrition. Guadalupe Valdez, Coordinator of the Dominican Republic Parliamentary Front against Hunger - and main driver of this legislation - affirms: “Providing the people with a law that guarantees the Right to Food, further commits us to continuing the fight against hunger and malnutrition”.

Senator Guido Girard Lavín presented the new law about food labelling of Chile in FAO Headquarters; this law will come into force in June, after a process started ten years ago and after an intense negotiation with the food industry. The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have acknowledged the need to respect, protect and fulfil the fundamental human right to food and optimal nutrition in Africa. During extensive deliberations at the Second Ordinary Session of the Fourth Parliament, the Parliamentarians agreed to establish a Pan-African Parliamentary Alliance for Food and Nutrition Security.  Recognizing their role as custodians of political commitments, the Parliamentarians have agreed to work with FAO to ensure food and nutrition security for all in the Continent. FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today urged lawmakers from around the world meeting in Rome to play their part in transforming into positive results the commitments to provide healthier diets for all people which governments are expected to adopt at this week's global nutrition conference. The FAO Director-General was speaking at a meeting organized in Rome by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) which represents lawmakers from over 170 countries.
