“From Seeds to Innovative Solutions, Safeguarding our Future”

Monday, 20 November 2023, 17:45 – 19:15 hrs
Plenary Hall, FAO Headquarters, Rome

Biodiversity, through the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, is a key entry point to achieving the transformative change to sustainable agriculture and food systems, and to enhance the resilience of agricultural systems.

The theme of the Tenth Session of the Governing Body highlights the mutual goals and interface between the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Treaty).

It emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to the implementation of the GBF, addressing the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources, recognizing their fundamental importance for global food security, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic well-being.

The Secretariat of the International Treaty will hold a Special Event, bringing together key stakeholders for agricultural biodiversity management, to have an interactive discussion on the linkages and synergies between the GBF and the International Treaty. Speakers will discuss innovative ideas on how to enhance conservation of plant diversity and promote sustainable agriculture and join efforts to achieve a more food-secure and resilient future for our planet.

The interactive discussion will be moderated by the renowned journalist and author, Dan Saladino.

The Special Event will take place right after the afternoon plenary session of the Governing Body. Simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be provided, and the event will be web-streamed live.
