Frequently Asked Questions on the FLAPP

What is the Food Loss App (FLAPP)?

The FLAPP was designed to collect data on crop losses at the pre- and post-harvest stages.
It generates descriptive analyses on losses and their causes (e.g. losses resulting from deficiencies, pests, diseases, premature or delayed harvest, etc.; losses resulting from weather conditions; poor handling; poor packaging; lack of knowledge, etc.) at all stages from harvest through to the wholesale market.
Quality attributes are pre-defined  through collaboration with commodity specialists, local experts and value chain actors and vary according to the specificities of the commodity and country.
The FLAPP includes a questionnaire designed to collect information on quantity and value, and therefore, collects information on change in value.

Languages

Currently the App is accessible in English and Spanish. Plans are underway to introduce additional languages.

How is data quality ensured?

The FLAPP was designed to crowdsource data on food losses. As more data is collected for each commodity and country, it will be possible to identify outliers and unreliable data. Should an individual user decide to submit incorrect or false data, the results generated will not be useful to them.

How does the FLAPP ensure privacy and confidentiality

All data is anonymized to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Personal information collected to verify the authenticity of users, consists of basic information typically gathered during data collection processes.
