Technical Platform on the Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste

FAO workshop on SDG indicator 12.3.1

20/04/2018

As custodian agency of 21 indicators, FAO has developed a methodology and guiding tools for each indicator which provide countries with step-by-step guidance on the entire reporting process, including data collection, assessment and computation of the results. Indicator 12.3.1 is in the process of reclassification from Tier III to Tier II. Thus, it is important that countries are well equipped to monitor this indicator and understand the data collection process.

The 12.3.1 methodology has been proposed at the Seventh International Conference on Agricultural Statistics (ICAS-VII) in Rome in October 2016, at the FAO External consultation on the Measurement of Food Losses and Waste in September 2017 and has been further refined in collaboration with experts and stakeholders before submission to the Inter-Agency Expert Group on SDGs.

This Capacity Development workshop represents an opportunity to increase awareness of this indicator and enhance the capacities of government representatives from selected countries on the indicator’s methodology and underlying data needs. For this purpose, it will bring together a group of about 15 participants from 15 countries, with one representative from each country either from the National Statistics Office or the Ministry of Agriculture, ideally with an expertise on postharvest losses, value chains and/or  agriculture surveys. The workshop includes the FAO regional statisticians who will be called by countries to provide technical assistance on the measurement of food losses.

You can download the workshop agenda and its concept note. Interested ones, who would like to remotely attend can access further information here.

The workshop launched by the Global Strategy to improve agricultural and rural statistics (GSARS) - hosted by the FAO’s Statistics Division (ESS) in Rome - a newly published

Guidelines on the measurement of harvest and post-harvest losses vii Recommendations on the design of a harvest and post-harvest loss statistics system for food grains (cereals and pulses).

The Guidelines build upon methodologies presented in other papers, technical reports and manuals published by FAO and other organizations. They provide recent findings on the measurement of harvest and postharvest losses in developing countries.
