An interactive experience: The State of School Feeding Worldwide 2022

This note summarizes FAO's approach to School Food and Nutrition highlighting the issues addressed, the main strategies and the expected results of implementing such approaches.

FAO School Food and Nutrition Framework

The FAO School Food and Nutrition Framework aims to support governments and institutions in developing, transforming or strengthening their school policies, programmes and other initiatives for an enhanced and synergistic impact on diets, child and adolescent nutrition, community socioeconomic development and local food systems.

School Food and Nutrition – Global Action Plan 2022–2026

The School food and nutrition - Global action plan seeks to consolidate and guide FAO’s synergistic efforts, setting out priority and concrete outputs to be achieved by 2026. Key activities are presented in the plan and organized in four action areas, prioritized based on identified gaps and needs, and considering the Organization’s technical competence and organizational comparative advantage. Such activities are meant to be adapted, contextualized and implemented according to regional and national priorities.

This publication is the result of a collective effort, and includes contributions from relevant technical units of FAO across global, regional and country levels. The development of this plan follows the publication and dissemination of the Organization’s School Food and Nutrition Framework, and provides the implementation roadmap to attain its expected results.

A Chance for every Schoolchild - WFP School Feeding Strategy 2020 - 2030

In this strategy (2020 – 2030) WFP lays out its vision of working with governments and partners to jointly ensure that all primary schoolchildren have access to good quality meals in school, accompanied by a broader integrated package of health and nutrition services.

This topic brief highlights how nutrition and healthy diets support the achievement of education and learning objectives, and explains how intervention benefits can be amplified with a whole-school and systems approach. The recommended actions are informed by the Global Standards for health-promoting schools. This evidence-informed resource is intended for national education, health and associated sectors to support the strengthening of national school health programmes.

Stepping up effective school health and nutrition

Health and nutrition form a foundation for education. Healthy, well-nourished children and adolescents learn better, and as adults they lead healthier and more productive lives. Therefore, investing in the health, nutrition and well-being of learners is as important as investing in education provision to achieve inclusive and equitable quality education. This transformation yields a triple dividend by impacting the lives of school children and adolescents today, their adulthood, and the generation of children to come.
