Drought is a multidimensional, meteorological, hydrological, agricultural and socio-economic phenomenon which exacerbates water scarcity challenges, desertification and ecosystem degradation and impacts the well-being of local populations at very large scales. The history of drought occurrences in the Maghreb region indicates that the phenomenon is structuralizing. No longer is this an exceptional crisis.

In light of the above, FAO has recently established a “drought portal” which is a global knowledge-sharing platform designed to help competent authorities and stakeholders to strengthen the resilience of agriculture and improve food security on a national level.

This report "Drought in the Maghreb Region: Diagnosis, Impacts, and Perspectives for Strengthening the Resilience of the Agricultural Sector " represents a new contribution to efforts aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector's resilience in facing drought and climate change impacts by emphasizing drought mitigation and adaptation in the context of climate change and water scarcity.

The actions proposed under this report covers institutional, scientific and technical, financial, legal and capacity building aspects. All within a framework of regional collaboration that the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) can facilitate.
