The FAO international symposium on “The role of agricultural biotechnologies in sustainable food systems and nutrition” took place from 15 to 17 February 2016 at FAO headquarters, Rome. Over 400 people attended, including 230 delegates from 75 member countries and the European Union, as well as representatives of intergovernmental organizations, private sector entities, civil society organizations, academia/research organizations and producer organizations/cooperatives.

Rural Advisory Services (RAS) are key to agricultural development and to improve the livelihood of millions of family farmers. This policy document looks at what are the specific needs of family farms and the response needed by RAS. The document results from several initiatives held during IYFF 2014: the FAO-GFRAS side event organized at the 5th GFRAS Annual Meeting in Buenos Aires on ‘RAS for family farms’, the side event during the Global Dialogue on Family Farming at FAO HQ and the FAO e-conference on ‘Tailoring RAS to family farms’.

CABI, the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International, has published the three main products (Synthesis DocumentConceptual Background, and Guidance Note on Operationalization) of the TAP Common Framework, whose objective is to advance agricultural innovation in tropical countries. More specifically, the Common Framework aims at promoting better coherence and greater impact of Capacity Development (CD) for Agricultural Innovation Systems (AIS).  

The Conceptual Background and the Guidance Note on Operationalization provide concepts, principles, definitions, approaches and tools to better understand the AIS architecture, assess CD needs, and plan, implement, and evaluate CD interventions. A new multi-media production (available here) showcases the positive outcome of an integrated pest management (IPM) initiative to control olive pests in the hills surrounding Canino, a small town in central Italy. The short film has been produced and released in the context of Impresa, a project funded by the European Union to assess the impact of research on EU agriculture in which FAO participated.

Partners of the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) met in Kigali (Rwanda) to review the progress made in the implementation of the TAP Action Plan in general, and of the EU-funded Capacity Development for Agricultural Innovation Systems (CDAIS) project in particular, as well as to approve the TAP Common Framework and the Work Plan for 2016. More than 50 participants - from 25 TAP Partners organizations and implementing partners of the CDAIS project - took part in the meeting, which was held in in Rwanda's Capital, Kigali, and lasted three days, from 19 to 21 January 2016.

IARBIC, an FAO supported project to intensify agriculture in Niger, has won the first prize in the competition for the “Best Sustainable Development Practices (BSDPs)” of the EXPO Milano 2015. The ceremony has taken place on July 6, 2015, at the Auditorium in Palazzo Italia with concluding remarks given by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture Maurizio Martina. During the ceremony, a video was projected showcasing IARBIC’s main goals and achievements. The project aimed at increasing agricultural production in Niger by facilitating access to innovative forms of financing and to quality fertilizers.

FAO's Research and Extension Unit, headed by Karin Nichterlein, will be FAO's technical focal point for the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FAO and three of Italy’s main research institutions in the areas of food, environment and technology. Two members of FAO's Research and Extension Unit (Karin Nichterlein and Andrea Sonnino) have co-authored with two additional experts in agricultural innovation (Philipp Aerni and Stephen Rudgard) an article that has been recently published on the journal "Sustainability". The paper provides a summary of the results obtained from three regional needs assessments of Capacity Development (CD) initiatives undertaken by the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP) and its partners.
