Rehabilitating irrigation canals in Somalia changes the lives of drought affected farmers

May 2022

Farmers in Somalia are facing more frequent droughts as a result of climate change

To help them navigate this increasingly urgent problem, FAO is rehabilitating over 140 km of irrigation canals in the Lower Shabelle region in collaboration with the federal and state Ministries of Agriculture with funding from the European Union.

Local workforce is being hired to do the rehabilitation works and women and youth are enganged in bush clearing activities, providing short-term jobs for the community. In the long-term, the project will provide local farmers with access to water.
