For millions of rural families, coffee is much more than a crop. It provides income, supports livelihoods and shapes the future of entire communities. But when households face low incomes, climate shocks and limited opportunities to earn a decent living, they may become more dependent on child labour as a coping strategy. Launched in 2023, the CLEAR Supply Chains project is helping address the root causes of child labour in coffee supply chains in Honduras and Uganda.

At the World Food Forum 2026, participants explored how better geospatial data, digital technologies and partnership could help close this gap. The side event DIGICHILD: GIS Innovation Against Child Labour, co-hosted by FAO and JDE Peet's, examined how digital tools can help identify hotspots of risk and support more targeted prevention efforts across agrifood systems. 

Recurring droughts, increasing water scarcity and vulnerable livelihoods: rural communities are among those most exposed to the impacts of climate change. Strengthening their resilience also means tapping into a resource whose potential remains largely untapped: the Moroccan diaspora.

Across rural communities worldwide, climate change is no longer a distant threat. Failed harvests, droughts, floods, land degradation and environmental change are already reshaping how people live, work and move. For many households, migration has become part of the strategies used to adapt and survive.
