Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN Refugee Agency the have distributed seeds and agricultural tools to 200 000 refugees and their host communities across South Sudan to help them become more self-sufficient in a country facing a serious food crisis.

The latest FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission to South Sudan shows a widening of the food gap in a country where fighting is disrupting markets and unfavourable rains have hampered crop yields. Mario Zappacosta, FAO Economist in South Sudan, explains that ending the conflict is crucial to resume production activities and encourage funding.

In South Sudan, FAO and UNESCO, with support from the European Union, are providing literacy and numeracy lessons for nomadic pastoralists living in cattle camps. They provide basic education and help build resilient pastoral livelihoods.
