Food security and trade in the Caribbean
Investment Centre staff in the Latin America and Caribbean Service have contributed to the successful approval of a new food security project for the Caribbean region which will be financed by the Government of Italy. The Centre prepared the first umbrella food security project in 2001, and during 2005 and 2006, led an initiative under which it assisted all fifteen of the Caribbean Community/Caribbean Forum (CARICOM/CARIFORUM) FAO member countries to each prepare a National Medium-Term Investment Programme and two to three associated Bankable Investment Project Profiles. This latter activity contributed to the next phase of the food security project, which Italian Cooperation has just announced they will additionally fund. The Centre and FAO Trade and Markets Division staff also collaborated on completion of the trade component of the project, which is summarized in a new FAO publication: “Agricultural Trade Policy and Food Security in the Caribbean: Structural Issues, Multilateral Negotiations and Competitiveness”, published in July 2007. The book aims to serve as a reference for Caribbean states in formulating agricultural, trade and related policies on food security at regional and national levels.
