10/12/2023

Co-lead by the Local2030 Coalition, FAO, UN-Habitat, UNDP, UCLG and the Global Task Force for Local and Regional Governments, this side event,  scheduled for 10th December 2023 from 12:30-1:30pm (GST), in the SDG Pavilion, Blue Zone, aspires to contribute to the COP28 agenda by highlighting the need for integrated, collaborative approaches to address the complex challenges posed by climate change, food security, and biodiversity loss at the local level. Through meaningful discussions and knowledge exchange, participants will be encouraged to take collective action towards building a more resilient and sustainable future.

Goals of the session:

  • Local Innovation and Adaptation: Showcase successful examples of locally driven initiatives that have effectively addressed climate change impacts, ensured food security, and promoted biodiversity conservation. Discuss the importance of empowering local communities and integrating indigenous knowledge into policy frameworks.
  • Policy Integration: Examine the need for integrated policies at subnational and national levels that align climate action, food systems, and biodiversity conservation. Highlight best practices in policy development that consider the interconnected nature of these issues and foster synergies between different sectors.
  • International Collaboration: Discuss the role of international cooperation in promoting multilevel governance. Explore opportunities for collaborative efforts between governments,, international organizations, and non-governmental entities to address global challenges and achieve the targets set in international agreements.

Outcomes:

  • Identification of Best Practices: Share and document successful multilevel governance practices that have positively impacted climate resilience, food security, and biodiversity conservation.
  • Policy Recommendations: Generate policy recommendations and guidelines for integrating climate, food, and biodiversity concerns into national and international governance frameworks.
  • Strengthened Networks: Foster collaboration and networking opportunities among participants to facilitate ongoing partnerships for effective multilevel governance.
