Our mandate

The South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) promotes the sustainable use of marine living resources in the South West Indian Ocean.

Established in 2004 through FAO Council Resolution 1/127 under Article VI, the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) is a Regional Fishery Advisory Body that supports its Members by:

  • Providing evidence-based advice and information to Member States and other regional organisations;
  • Coordinating and delivering effective research to support fisheries management;
  • Promoting coordinated capacity development of Members institutions regarding fisheries management;
  • Encouraging enhanced stakeholder participation and communication.
