Tajikistan became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in October 1995. FAO’s assistance initially provided in the form of short-term emergency interventions in response to locust outbreaks, as well as supply of agricultural inputs, animal health and potato seed production. In 2016, the FAO and the Government of Tajikistan formalized their partnership by signing an agreement to establish a representation office in Dushanbe. Since then, the FAO and the Government of Tajikistan have worked tirelessly to address the challenges of hunger and poverty in the country.  

FAO's partnership with Tajikistan has contributed to the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and agrobiodiversity conservation, the strengthening of food security and safety, mitigating climate change, improving livelihoods and the support of the country's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FAO has also supported agriculture-related policies and initiatives, with a range of field programmes and emphasis on technical advisory services and capacity building with the aim to advance the agricultural sector and its sub-sectors. 

Furthermore, the FAO, the Government of Tajikistan, and other development partners are collaborating to enhance production and productivity, while promoting the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources. These efforts are meticulously designed to transform the country's agri-food systems into more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable models, and are centered on the transformation of agri-food systems with the objective of ensuring better production, better nutrition, better environment and a better life for all, with the fundamental principle of leaving no one behind.
