In Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Grenada, agriculture is more than an economic sector, it is a lifeline. In climate-vulnerable island economies, resilience isn’t optional; it must be built into crops, practices, institutions, and markets. Grenada needed more than higher production. It needed resilient systems, stronger institutions, and investment-ready opportunities.

What began as a USD 380 000 investment became a pathway to resilience. Through FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) with a focus on sea moss and soursop, agriculture was reimagined, climate-smart, market-driven, and built to last.

Working with national institutions and communities, the project turned potential into real value. Farmers and technicians were not just trained but equipped to lead. Climate-smart practices spread across farms, while value chain players strengthened coordination.

The result: not just better production, but a system ready to grow.

This initial project generated strong momentum, leading to further investments that built on its results and lessons. These include the Farmers' Organizations for Africa, Caribbean and Pacific ( FO4ACP ) programme , funded by IFAD, the European Union and OACPS, and implemented by FAO, and the Standards and Trade Development Facility  project supporting value chain upgrades and capacity strengthening.

By its close, USD 2.7 million in follow-up funding had been mobilized, clear proof of readiness and opportunity. Targeted support became a catalyst for investment, unlocking public and private partnerships. For Grenada that is a return on investment that truly matters: a resilient agrifood story still unfolding.
