FAO in Timor-Leste

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been a key partner in Timor-Leste's journey toward sustainable development since 1999. Agriculture – crop and livestock production, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture – is a cornerstone of the national economy, providing 70 percent of employment and contributing 16.7 percent to GDP in 2023.

FAO works closely with the Government of Timor-Leste, rural communities and other actors to strengthen food security and nutrition. By aligning with Timor-Leste’s development priorities, FAO continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the country’s vision towards more productive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems and improved livelihoods.
