The Praia Call for Action

The First WASAG International Forum – which took place in Praia, Cabo Verde, from 19 to 21 March 2019 with the theme of “Leaving no one behind” – adopted the Praia Commitments as a firm first step towards decisive actions.

This document highlights the outcomes of the the Second WASAG International Forum with the theme “Making Agriculture more resilient for climate change: an opportunity for action and collaboration”, during which participants adopted the Praia Call for Action as a second step towards decisive and concrete action to be taken.

WASAG Strategy for 2021-2024 - Turning water scarcity into opportunities for sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition

WASAG has developed its Strategy for 2021 - 2024. The Strategy takes stock of achievements and proposes a theory of change through which key action areas are identified, focused on collaborative solutions, building on the comparative advantages of its partners.


Water scarcity is one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Agriculture, encompassing crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture and forestry, is both a cause and a victim of water scarcity. This flyer provides succinct information about WASAG mandate, and the activities of the Working Groups and Partners in addressing water scarcity.  

The Praia Commitment

In an effort to draw greater attention to the issue of water scarcity in agriculture in the context of climate change and to generate greater political will for overcoming the related challenges throughout the world, WASAG organized the 1st WASAG International Forum on Water Scarcity in Agriculture in Praia, Cabo Verde. The participants of the forum commit to 17 key actions, known as Praia Commitment, which are aligned with the Working Groups to address water scarcity.

COAG Resolution

During the 26th Session of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) held in October 2018, Members Countries recorgnised WASAG as a vital Framework to adapt to the effects of water scarcity in agriculture and subsequently, gave WASAG the mandate to support them in addressing the challenges of water scarcity in agriculture in the context of climate change.

The Rome Statement Water Scarcity in Agriculture

The Rome Statement on Water Scarcity in Agriculture is the collaborative agreement of WASAG Partners and Stakeholders to jointly address the challenges of water scarcity in agriculture in a changing climate. This Rome Statement emerged from a meeting of WASAG Partners and Stakeholders held on 19–20 April 2017 at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
