The National Commission for Colombia formed by stakeholders in the banana sector in the country addresses current and future challenges in the industry, providing a neutral space for discussion and collaboration, with an initial focus on environmentally sustainable production and Integrated Pest Management.

Objectives

1. Establish a national platform to exchange best practices and promote ‘low emission’ banana production and trade.
2. Facilitate collaboration among stakeholders, supporting political dialogue to advance the production and trade of ‘low-carbon emitting’ bananas.
3. Support strategies to prevent and control diseases in national banana production, including Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4.
4. Promote the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) and efficient energy use in banana production.
5. Encourage sustainable agricultural practices, including the use of low-impact fertilizers and agrochemicals and the implementation of sustainable farming systems.
6. Improve natural resource management, minimizing pollution and deforestation linked to banana production.
7. Train and raise awareness among producers and workers about sustainability and the environmental and social challenges of banana production.
8. Develop Integrated Pest Management guidelines for national banana production.
9. Support producers and exporters in meeting the environmental requirements of the EU’s Due Diligence and other international sustainability standards.
