Enacting Resilience: The Response of Local Solidarity-based Partnerships for Agroecology to the COVID-19 crisis

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the need for solidarity-based, resilient food systems is increasingly evident. Long-standing and viable models such as Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and other types of Local Solidarity-based Partnerships for Agroecology (LSPAs) have played a critical role in safely and efficiently feeding local communities.

The crisis has also amplified the connection between the production and access to local food, climate change, and the potential of sustainable agroecological practices of small-scale family farms to provide healthy and nutritious food for all. While firmly grounding them in direct short supply chains between producers and consumers, food systems' relocalization can play a crucial role in ensuring solidarity economy and food sovereignty.

URGENCI is a model network of citizens, small-scale food producers, consumers, activists, and researchers representing LSPA networks and initiatives in over 40 countries. One of the core missions of URGENCI is to raise awareness of the social impact of these alternative farming and consumption systems and make them more visible and widely recognized. This network provides a detailed understanding of how solidarity-based short supply chains and territorial food distribution systems support people's access to food during the COVID-19 crisis.
