TECHNICAL SEMINAR FAO, 1 OCTOBER - Promoting sustainable urban and periurban agriculture: an example of agroecological practices in Rosario (Argentina)

27/09/2019 -

The FAO Technical Network on Sustainable Crop Production and Agroecology, SP2 and SP4 organize on Tuesday 1 of October from 14:30-16:00 (CEST)  a seminar on ''Promoting sustinable urban and periurban agriculture: an example of agroecological practices in Rosario (Argentina)''.
The Seminar will take place in FAO Headquarters, Malasya Room (B227) and it will be conducted in English and Spanish.

During this seminar, the experience of the Urban Agriculture Programme of Rosario (Argentina) will be presented by the moderator, Fenton Beed (AGPML Team Leader) and by Antonio Lattuca (co-founder and coordinator of the Urban Agricultural Program of Rosario, Argentina).

It is a result of the implementation of public policy of the Ministry of Social Economy of the Municipality of Rosario. It was launched in 2000 as an integral response to a food security and poverty crisis. By integrating principles of agroecology to transform public wastelands into sustainable productive spaces, the programme has contributed to increased access to healthy food, income generation and social cohesion. It fosters the co-creation of knowledge and capacity building by empowering unemployed youth, women and men and allowing them to become innovative food producers, improve their access to healthy nutritious food and increase their income through local market creation. The Programme is an international reference on urban and periurban agriculture - that integrates agroecology principles - and mainstreams it in local policies and planning.

Antonio Lattuca, the speaker of the seminar, is an agronomist with a Masters in Agroecology from the International University of Andalucia, and has more than 30 years of experience in strengthening the capacities of institutions and actors to generate appropriate conditions for the implementation of agroecological approaches in both urban and rural areas.
