Farmers in the Americas have been managing FAW for thousands of years. The smallholder maize farmers of Mesoamerica and the researchers there have many valuable lessons learned for smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. FAO organized an experts meeting in July 2017 in Ghana to share the knowledge and experiences with their African colleagues. Out of this consultation, the Farmer Field School Guide for FAW management was developed and Technical Working Groups were formed.

FAO has been working with many partners to identify, validate, and use sustainable pest management practices for FAW. This Integrated Pest Management Programme for Smallholders provides opportunities and platforms for further innovation to develop knowledge and effective solutions for the smallholders’ context. Key approaches include the use of plant diversity, conservation and augmentation of natural biological control, and the use of safe, locally-available controls, strengthened monitoring and surveillance for early detection and research.

The experiences from the Americas and Africa are extremely relevant to the new regions to which the FAW has recently spread: Near East and Asia.
