The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was established in 1947. Its aim is to promote pan-European economic integration and it includes 56 member states in Asia, Europe and North America. 

Since 1947, UNECE’s work on forests and the forest sector has been carried out jointly with FAO, most recently through the joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section. The Section provides the Secretariat to the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission, and works to implement the UNECE/FAO Integrated Programme of Work. 

The Programme covers many topics related to forest resources, sustainable forest management, forest products and services, and forest products markets. It also addresses issues related to climate change and the linkages between sustainable forest management and the green economy, such as innovation in the forest sector and ecosystem services.

The UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, working with countries and global and regional partners, collects, analyses and disseminates comprehensive data about forests in the UNECE region, their management, forest products and trade, wood energy, and future outlooks for the forest sector.
