United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) was established in 1947. Its aim is to promote pan-European economic integration and it includes 56 member states in Asia, Europe and North America.

Since 1947, UNECE’s work on forests and the forest sector has been carried out jointly with FAO, most recently through the joint UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section. The Section provides the Secretariat to the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry and the FAO European Forestry Commission, and works to implement the UNECE/FAO Integrated Programme of Work

The Programme covers many topics related to forest resources, sustainable forest management, forest products and services, and forest products markets. It also addresses issues related to climate change and the linkages between sustainable forest management and the green economy, such as innovation in the forest sector and ecosystem services.

FAO is also hosting the Pan European dataset on the quantitative indicators for sustainable forest management.

The UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, working with countries and global and regional partners, collects, analyses and disseminates comprehensive data about forests in the UNECE region, their management, forest products and trade, wood energy, and future outlooks for the forest sector. More information about outputs can be found here. Collected data is shared through a variety of tools, including INForest – the data and knowledge platform for forests in the UNECE region.
